PREFACE TO INTERNET VERSION

Thanks to the Internet, the important 1979 Eugene study can now be made available on demand to a worldwide readership. I thank Diane Bishop, of the City of Eugene bicycle program, for having provided a paper copy for conversion into an Internet version.

I have converted the text of the report using optical character recognition software, so it is searchable and accessible for visually-impaired readers. Graphics, including the attractive decorative artwork, are reproduced in a computer-friendly size, and also a large size suitable for reprinting, which preserves the detail of the originals.

I have also carefully read through the study and prepared comments, which I have included on a separate Web page.
