Bicycle facilities in Fresh Pond area,
Cambridge, Massachusetts

This page provides an overview of several bicycle facilities constructed 1998-2002 in the Fresh Pond area of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The links here are to pages describing each of the facilities in detail. Or you may click on locations in the aerial photo, below.

Concord Avenue west of the rotary intersections had a travel lane removed and bike lanes striped in 1998-1999 (red lines starting at location A, top left in aerial photo). This part of Concord Avenue is much better to ride than it was before.

A new bicycle path in Fresh Pond Park has been constructed in the spring of 2002  (yellow line, locations A-H in aerial photo). This path provides useful access to locations in the park. The northern end of the path (locations A-B) serves along with part of the sidepath (locations K-L) and three new crosswalks as a very slow  pedestrian-type bicycle route past the rotary intersections on Concord Avenue. The southern end of the path connects to Huron Avenue, but, shorter routes also exist, and would avoid a hazardous intersection.

A two-way bicycle sidepath/sidewalk has been installed in the spring of 2002 along Concord Avenue between the two rotary intersections (orange line, locations N-J near top of aerial photo). This path crosses two streets and seven commercial driveways and is an example of the most dangerous type of bicycle facility known.
