for LAB Regional
Director

This page was first posted as part of  my 2003 campaign for New York-New England Regional Director of the League of American Bicyclists. I am keeping the campaign pages online, with brief additional comments (here, inside the box), for the information of League members.

My credentials

I have been a member of the League and of Charles River Wheelmen since 1979; an Effective Cycling Instructor/League Cycling instructor since 1982. I am a former President of the Boston Area Bicycle Coalition (now Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition) and former State Legislative Representative for the League.

I have served on numerous advisory boards and committees, and have written several reports about bicycling under contract to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. More detail, and links to reports available online.

I am author or co-author of several books on bicycling including Sutherland's Handbook for Bicycle Mechanics. I ma the author of the pamphlet Bicycling Street Smarts, which has sold well over 300,000 copies and has been adopted as the official bicycle driver's manual by   Pennsylvania and Ohio. View a list of my book and pamphlet publications about bicycling.

My writing career and my background as an engineer led to my being called on by attorneys to work as an expert witness in lawsuits resulting from bicycle crashes. In that capacity, I have developed a good knowledge of legal issues affecting bicyclists. I am the principal author of the 1991 LAB position statement on mandatory helmet laws.

I have received endorsements of my candidacy from colleagues in Massachusetts advocacy, and from long-time League volunteers and officers.

I have attended and served as a workshop leader at numerous conferences and rallies.

For more details, please see my résumé.
